Frequently Asked Questions
What is the aim of ICRAF individual training?
Individual learning at ICRAF allows students and other learners
to work along the Centres professional staff in the context of
agroforestry-related research and development activities of mutual
interest to both. In the context of formal education, this mostly
deals with thesis research even though short, intensive on-the-job
training (skills) can also be considered.
Are we assured of training opportunities at ICRAF?
Individual learning opportunities need to be of interest both to
Centre supervisors and learners. The Centre offers no individual
learning opportunities in areas outside research and development
mandate. For more information on the Centre's work, consult the
webpages. The Centre has no funding to pay for individual learning
and thus interested learners need to make sure they are fully sponsored.
However, in some cases limited operational expenses can be covered
depending on the activity.
What are the different training opportunities for individual
training?
There are three categories of individual training
based to the objective and duration of the programme, availability
of facilities, resources as well as levels of experience of the
candidate.
- Research fellows are researchers or practitioners
at partner institutions who require short-term practical training
in specific areas including laboratory techniques, research and
dissemination methodologies.
- Degree fellows are students registered at
a University for Masters or Doctoral degrees. They join ICRAF
programme to work on research projects for a period from 3 to
36 months depending on their research topics. A degree fellowship
leads to submission of a thesis and award of e degree.
- Students-on- attachment are undergraduates
at universities, polytechnics and other institutions who would
like to familiarize themselves with agroforestry for a period
of two to six months. A students attachment leads to submission
of a project as required by the ICRAF supervisor and the student's
academic programme.
How are queries and applications handled?
All applications for attachments and fellowships to projects and
units at ICRAF-HQ and within the Eastern and Central Africa are
processed by the training unit.
Attachments and fellowships at other locations are processed by
the respective Regional Training Liaison staff.
Completed applications should be returned to the
Training Officer, World Agroforestry Centre, P.O. Box 30677-00100,
Nairobi or email h.ochieng@cgiar.org
The application should be received between three and six months
before the date that the applicant proposes to begin the attachment
or fellowship.
How long should one wait for response?
" The Centre has limited capacity to process the numerous applications
it receives. Therefore, the Training Unit will strive to acknowledge
and respond to all applicants as soon as possible.
