In several ways, the World Agroforestry Centre provides capacity development opportunities for students and other individual learners from universities, national research institutes and other government and non-government departments to learn from the experiences of our senior scientists.
Fellowships
Each year, we host a number of degree students at the MSc and PhD levels who conduct their thesis research in collaboration with our scientific staff in the context of the Centre’s research for development agenda.
Students, both from developing and developed countries, are encouraged to apply for such fellowships and our Training Unit serves as a broker between students and supervisors when opportunities for such fellowships arise.
In terms of funding these fellowships, several of the Centre’s programmes and projects provide funding opportunities to host students conducting their thesis research, allowing them to contribute to specific research for development activities.
Scholarships
We offer several memorial scholarships honouring World Agroforestry Centre scientists who passed away while working at the Centre or afterwards.
These scholarships are for postgraduate students wishing to conduct their thesis research in collaboration with World Agroforestry Centre scientists. They offer up to USD 5,000 to meet tuition and other related expenses such as field research, laboratory analysis and thesis production.
Student Attachment
We host short attachments for individual learners (students) who want to gain on-the-job experience while working alongside our scientific staff. Such aatachments are usually for three to six months. The Training Unit facilitates these attachments when they are related to the Centre’s research for development agenda.
Other opportunities
Our Training Unit helps to identify other relevant fellowships and scholarships in the area of agroforestry and natural resources management and potential sources of funding for these.
Students can also self-sponsor when it comes to funding their research at the Centre.
