Establishment and purpose: The World Agroforestry Memorial Scholarship fund was formally established in 2004, as one way to honour scientists and other ICRAF staff who may pass away while in active service with ICRAF. With this fund we honor the life, the concerns, the social and scientific passions of each individual listed here, and celebrate their contributions to the advancement of Agroforestry.
Funding contributions: Any person sympathetic to the work of Worldagroforestry and its scientists may contribute to the fund. Each contribution must be specified as to whether it is to a specific individual or to the general fund. The distinction is important, as shown hereunder:
a) Contributions to individual scholarship funds: These are contributions made specifically to honour a specific person and his/her work. In offering the scholarship the name of that individual is mentioned and a certificate offered in honour of that person.
b) Contributions to the General Memorial Scholarship fund: These are contributions made to honour all those listed in this brochure (the list will be updated as needed). For each US dollar contributed for this particular fund, Worldagroforestry has pledged to contribute two US dollars.
NOTE: US tax payers are advised to contribute through: Ed Sulzberger, World Agroforestry Council 4012 PIRATES BEACH, GALVESTON TEXAS 77554 USA so that their contributions will be tax deductible.
The Memorial Scholarship Committee will also seek funding from institutions, either as general contributions to the named scholarships or as more specific projects administered through the scholarship programme.
Awarding process and criteria: For both types of funds, scholarships will be granted once each year, normally between May and August. The process involves announcements, proposal review, and selection of grantees by a small panel of ICRAF senior staff. Criteria for the review process will include: (1) enrollment and in good standing in an appropriate graduate programme; (2) applicant is a national of a country where ICRAF has an active field research programmes, with preference for individuals undertaking research in their home country; (3) scientific merit. (4) the match between the applicant’s proposed research and the research areas of the specific deceased individuals; and (5) proposed research will be conducted in a country where ICRAF has active field research programmes. Additional specific criteria will be developed for each named scholarship.
Field work conducted by scholarship grantees will be co-supervised by an ICRAF scientist. Grantees may be required to deliver a public lecture at an ICRAF at the conclusion of their studies. A copy their completed dissertation must be deposited with ICRAF.
