Individual Training Opportunity
The World Agroforestry Centre places strong emphasis on building the capacity of partner research institutions and universities to develop and conduct agroforestry research. The goal is to enable them to develop a critical mass of scientific expertise to respond to agroforestry research needs. To achieve this goal, the Centre works with partners to develop collaborative programmes that provide opportunities for their staff to excel in research and education in agroforestry. Under this arrangement, highly competitive fellowships are made available for qualifying scientists to carry out agroforestry research under the supervision of Centre scientists at our collaborative research sites. The programme operates through three major arrangements: postgraduate fellowships (Master or Ph.D. degrees, or their equivalents) research fellowships (non-degree) and student attachments (undergraduates) (see FAQ).
Each year, the Centre hosts an important number of students and scientists taking advantage of the degree and non-degree individual learning opportunities offered at its Headquarters or in the different regions. Centre professionals staff values this since the research or development work undertaken by these trainees can make a significant contribution to high quality agroforestry research and development. Individual trainees benefit from this practical field experience gained since it directly contributed to obtaining their degree. Short term, non-degree student attachments also provide an opportunity to learn, gain valuable experience and contribute to the Centre's work. Together with our professional staff, we identify and advertise opportunities and provide overall coordination and support to this activity.
The objective of individual training is to strengthen the growth and maturity of multi-disciplinary research teams and their capacity to contribute to agroforestry science.
The specific objectives are:
- to impart the Centres experiences in agroforestry research and training to needy individuals and institutions with potential to multiply and share it.
- to pool together and coordinate agroforestry research capacity scattered in various institutions and disciplines to focus on common research issues and speed up the process of finding solutions, and
- to create opportunities for exchange of information and emergence of collaborative programmes among institutions involved in agroforestry research, education and extension.
Specialized non-degree training is available for individuals or small groups of candidates if officially requested by their national agricultural research systems.
