Story from “Max Havelaar”
Region: A Visit to the Bupati of Lebak
The Lebak District can be reached within four
hours of journey from Jakarta, capital of
Indonesia, toward the interior of Mount
Halimun-Salak National Park.
Adminis-
tratively, the district consists of 300 villages
with a total area of ±285,996 hectares.
The Lebak District itself reminds us to the
well-known book of Max Havelaar, written
and published in 1860 by Eduard Douwes
Dekker.
The book tells us about the ill
and discrimination condition by the Dutch
Administration to the native people at that
time, based on his personal account as
assistant-resident in Lebak in 1856. More |

One-day
Seminar. Improving the Capacity
of Rubber-Based Plantation Developers
with Environmental Sense,
Muara Bungo, 1 May 2007.
The jungle rubber system is unique:
although it has low productivity, it effecti-
vely conserves biodiversity. Rubber Agro-
forestry System (RAS) is a method of
cultivation that introduced good planting
materials (clone rubber) with low until
medium input (weeding and applying ferti-
lizer) into traditional cultivation to improve
the productivity. More |

What
is Agroforestry?
For millennia, farmers have nurtured trees on their farm and pasture
lands and around their homes.
We define agroforestry as a dynamic, ecologically
based, natural resources management system that, through the
integration of trees on farms and in the agricultural landscape,
diversifies and sustains production. Our interest derives from
the (potential) social, economic and environmental benefits for all land
users. |

REDD,
green or gold. Corporate
Social Responsibility, Jakarta Post (31
January 2008)
Among the developing countries, Indonesia probably has the highest such emissions and thus
the best opportunities to reduce them. Indonesia played a proactive role in the international
negotiations of new regimes of commitments and incentives. It
now has two years to prove that REDD mechanisms can work and
that the global community can benefit from a full-scale REDD
inclusion in a post-Kyoto regime.

Media Release
- Prakarsa Rakyat (Source:
Koran Tempo)

REDD:
SOLUSI ATAU BEBAN?
(8 January 2008)
tempat tinggal mereka terancam tenggelam bila terjadi kenaikan
permukaan air laut.

Respecting the
rights of indigenous people
(7 January 2008)
By many estimates, Indonesia is one of the world's leading
emitters of carbon dioxide, the most prevalent of the global
warming gases. This is due to the large amounts of carbon that
are released into the atmosphere through peat and forestland
logging and clearing for palm oil and pulp wood plantations.

Seminar
on CO2 Emissions from Forest
and Peatlands. Bogor,
Indonesia. 20 November 2007.
The
seminar addressed how conversion of forests and peatlands for
various land uses in Indonesia had generated very little
economic benefit while releasing huge amounts of greenhouse
gases into the atmosphere. These findings come from a study
that covers three provinces of Indonesia (16 percent of the
total Indonesian land area) and accounts for 16 percent of the
country’s greenhouse gas emissions. It can therefore be
considered relatively representative of the situation across
the country. More

is to ask attention for the exclusion of most current peatland
emissions from the scope of REDD as currently discussed, while
it is not to late for negotiators to widen the scope. More

One Day Seminar on Avoided
Deforestation and Carbon Emissions with Sustainable Benefits (ADSB)
in Indonesia’s Forest Mosaics and Peat lands.
Bogor,
Indonesia. 20 November
The objectives of this seminar are to (i) discuss results of
land use, land use change and forest (LULUCF) analyses and
‘abatement costs’ of reducing emission from deforestation
and degradation (REDD), (ii) gain better understanding in CO2
emission estimate especially that of peat land use, and (iii)
identify knowledge gaps and opportunities to better link
existing knowledge to action in the coming years of
experimentation with REDD mechanisms at landscape scale. More

Watershed
Management at ICRAF
Despite substantial research, many
misconceptions exist about the relationships between trees and
water in landscapes. Not only are there communication gaps
between scientists and policy makers; there also are marked
differences among scientists, including scientists with equally
impressive backgrounds in forestry, hydrology or plant
physiology. The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)
seeks to improve the empirical evidence, tools and overall
scientific basis of watershed management, particularly on the
potential of trees on farm to shape hydrologic processes.

Training
on Climate Change and Carbon Stocks Measurement in Suaka
Margasatwa Nantu—Gorontalo, 17
– 19 July 2007
The event is very
timely as Indonesia is currently known as the third largest
carbon emitter in the worldly, mainly due to deforestation and
conversion of peatland. Further understanding on how Suaka
Margasatwa Nantu has managed to keep its forest intact amidst
the rapid and dynamic changes in the surrounding landscape would
be of benefit, particularly in developing mechanisms to Reduce
Emission from Deforestation (RED). More

ICRAF

were the only exception to this ('plug

– and we have an uphill struggle, but can report some progress
at least on two fronts: recognition for jungle rubber on its
ES/Biodiversity performance, and exploration of ‘intermediate
intensification’ pathways in rubber agroforestry. These issues
made it into the official opening speech for the meeting. More
